Upside down in the bathroom

Posted by Boudica on May 18, 2006 1:50 PM |

I dashed downstairs at 230 a.m. this morning to answer the phone. Two thirty!! It was mam, she couldn't sleep because she thought all her wordly goods were going to be stolen. After 10 mins of trying to reason with her I ended up shouting, totally unforgiveable, 'I didn't raise you to shout at me' she said hurt, nothing I could say or do would convince her that the BT call was not phoney.
Eight a.m. this morning I called BT again to absolutely confirm without doubt that I had in fact been speaking to one of their people and the woman told me not to worry there would be a letter in the post to mam. Packed my bag and went out to Spanish stopping on the way to say 'goodbye' to my French lodger who is on his way back to France forever. Shouted to my daughter that I would not be taking a key and not to lock me out.
Spanish was really difficult and I was paired off with my teacher, even worse, she takes no prisoners in the nicest possible way. I didn't want her to realise how dull I was, but it is hard to cover up when it is one on one. Didn't get away with it and feel incredibly guilty because she is such a good teacher it is me not putting in the work.
Glad to get home and what happened next?

My daugher had left the key outside in a secret hiding place as she had to go out but it wouldn't turn in the lock! The blinkin French lodger had gone leaving his key in the door inside! I sat in the garden waiting for my daughter's return. The nun next door asked me if I was locked out and when I said 'yes' she insisted on making me a lovely cup of coffee and a plate of fresh pineapple to help the time pass.
Was I glad to see my daughter but when I told her of the problem I realised that we had a bigger problem she was relying on that key too. Panick set in. We looked up and saw the bathroom window was open but it is at least 15 ft up. By this time we were joined by the nun and my other neighbour who is a Jehova's witness. There we were four women all scratching our heads. The nun went into her garage and got a ladder it was only 12ft high so my daughter had to scramble on the pipes to reach the window cill.
There she was trying to get her body through the little gap with us shouting words of encouragement from ground level. To no avail. Then the nun had the idea of getting her duvet from next door to throw into the bathroom to cushion her fall and the other neighbour handed up a brush.
In went the duvet and in went the daughter and low and behold her teeshirt got stuck on the hook of the window 'oh, oh,' said the nun 'we might have to call the fire brigade' All we could see of said daughter were her feet and legs. After what seemed like ages she twisted her body around and ripped her tee shirt and fell onto the floor of the bathroom. Everything went quiet and a little voice said 'I'm okay, I'm okay' to loud cheers down below.
The French lodger would have known that we would not have been able to open that door with his keys on the inside because we locked him out on more than one occasion. Did he do it deliberately I wonder? Is he laughing all the way to London on the 'Mega bus'
It is only 2 p.m. I feel if the day progresses without any more drama I would be ever so grateful I feel so wound up. I just rang mam and she said that she forgives me and that she is having her money transferred out of her account and cancelling the direct debit. I have confessed all to my brothers and they have been very supportive. And mam says she still loves me.
