Bought the "Big Issue" advertised inside was a St. David's Day Celebration in St. David's Hall, Cardiff. Asked my brother if he was interested in going and that was it off we trotted to Cardiff.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales were performing Wales' favourite traditional tunes with a first outing for Alan Hoddinott's new song cycle "Serenissima" Well, that performance was a bit over my head, but when it was announced afterwards that he was a boy from Bargoed, I was well impressed.
It was the performance of Respighi's - Pines of Rome that moved me. I had no idea of the background of the piece of music. Whilst listening to it I imagined there to be a beautiful morning followed by someone dying and some sort of victory. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up when the orchestra whipped up the tempo and crashed into the final chords.
When I got home I had to look up the composer on the computer to see what he was saying in the piece it said that Respighi was a composer of symphonic poems, a sort of pictorial music aiming at portraying events or locations.
My own take on the music hadn't been that far out there had been a victory and people dying I have never felt so cultured!
