Scary encounter

Posted by Boudica on July 17, 2007 12:39 PM |

Walked into my room and saw a stranger standing in my bathroom....let out a little scream and then realised to my relief it was me....

Well, why would you put a full length mirror on the door for goodness sake? Read an article today about tipping in Bali apparently a couple of the big travel books have recommended not to but this journalist was taking them to task as he was horrified by their advice.
He reminded everyone of the extreme poverty in Bali and how much they rely on their tips to survive, this guy asked everyone to leave some of their clothes on the hotel bed when they leave he said holiday makers had so much and these people had so little, the clothes would be washed and ironed and treasured.
Remembering the article I decided to to tip everyone but my big problem is I don't understand their money so I could be giving them something very very small or buying them a house!!! An example of this was last night I went into a bar and ordered a drink the bill came back at what I understood to be 27 thousand pounds so I stared to count out 5 - 10 - 15....till I saw the confusion on the waiters face "no, no madam" he said "just one of those" apparently the bill as 2 thousand 7 hundred pounds. As for leaving clothes on the bed well, I am such a large person my clothe would bury the locals. I suppose they could cut them up and make a few items from them though.

I'm so glad you're enjoying Bali. As for the money, take the 0's off and then work out the exchange. Yes, they are poor and do rely on their tips. We are like walking wallets to them! Keep you hand on your ha'penny, as they say. lol Trudie xxx
