I spent the morning underneath my van with an expert ( I think I will retrain as a mechanic as it was so interesting) I loved the fact that he had the initiative to ask me to join him to point out the faults, it was fascinating.

Unfortunately, I have to have a new radiator, my exhaust is blowing and the alternator belt tension is incorrect! All in all with other minor adjustments it is going to cost me a whopping £250 to put right. I have to bite the bullet and pay because then the van will be roadworthy and apparently it is to be expected with second hand vans...faults.
I took it back to the garage where I purchased it, the owner was away, the son and the mechanic did a lot of standing around rubbing their heads saying they couldn't find a leak but I was able to state quite catagorically that there was a leak as I had seen it with my own eyes underneath my vehicle. They eyed me up and down suspiciously and then they volunteered that the fault wasn't covered under warranty. I asked if they would give me a good price to correct it as I had bought the van from them and fair play he did but then he argued with the mechanic about who was going to take on the job.
I thought back to the lovely man who had taken the time to show me the fault with the van even though he knew I was going to take it back to the garage who had sold it to me and I thought sod them. I would rather pay the extra money and be sure a good job is completed ready for my Christmas rush. Am I insane?

No. And if he's as good as he seems, keep using him. Rare as hen's teeth tehy are, reliable mechanics! B-)
