Italian hospitality

Easter Monday and we couldn't find a shop or restaurant open anywhere and we were starving, the roads were deserted we were resolved to go back to the villa and eat the few olives and cheese that were lurking around in the fridge.

Luckily we spotted a man jumping into his car so we asked him if he could direct us to somewhere that sold food. That is how we ended up in "Fanny's" and what a top class place it was....when we got there we thought we had walked into a wedding party but on closer inspection we could see that it was just full of families and friends. The tables were set out for 30 people at a stretch, they were drinking wine and making merry.

One day when we were out looking for a nice lunch we were directed to a place on the end of the street. When we arrived there we were met by a little woman in a chef's apron and white hat, she ushered us around the side of the building up some steep steps into what appeared to be her bedroom but instead of the bed there were two tables.
We sat down and she disappeared downstairs. We sat and waited and wondered...and waited until at last my daughter shouted down the stairs "Pardon madam, menue por favore" "No, No" came a voice in the distance.
What are we going to eat we wondered and how much will she expect us to pay! After 20 mins we were getting a little uneasy but then to our relief we heard footsteps on the stairs and the woman appeared with a tray full of delicious food smiling widely. All in all she went up and down the stairs three times bringing us all manner of delicious dishes. And the bill came to no more than £6 each, we were delighted. Imagine going into a restaurant in Britain and food being plonked in front of you without a menu, the more I think of it the more I like that idea. We should live more dangerously in our country.

Waiting for the meal to arrive....and wondering what it was going to taste like...

In Italy a strange woman plonks down a range of food you hadn't decided upon - lovely. I can't see me working up the enthusiasm to do it in Britain, say Glasgow where you'd end up with deep fried Mars Bars and pizza!

Now, Now, you know we have had some cracking meals in Scotland and thinking about it due to the strong accent and description of some items "tattys and ....." we had to go with our instincts sometimes.
