I am now a fully fledged member of my local metal detecting club. I literally stepped off the plane from Italy into a muddy field in the shadow of the Brecon Beacons. It was an early start we had to meet at the Storey Arms and then we drove to the farm where we had been given the permission of the farmer to dig.
The only information I had was the meeting point, as a result I assumed that we would be on our way home around mid-day so I didn't take a drink or food. Added to that I had walked past my spade in the garden and forgotten to take it, and I couldn't find my headset. I was in a sorry state I can tell you.
As we stepped into the first field I felt a surge of anticipation and excitement and blow me down within 5 mins I had found my first find of the day a medieval button. I was over the moon. Little did I know that everyone would find a similar button they are very common finds, but this was my button and I was ever so proud.
After an hour or two I could see people standing around in groups discussing their finds and identifying objects. They were red hot on recognising things covered in big lumps of earth! There was a break for lunch, luckily, Paul the chairman took pity on me and offered me a cup of tea and Ann the treasurer gave me a Welsh cake. Carl a fellow enthusiast offered me a lovely sandwich but I was too embarassed to take it. They must have wondered how on earth I was so overweight when I seemingly eat like a bird!
At about 2.30 p.m. I collapsed in a big heap and watched people twice my age zip past me listening intently to their beeps. I gathered a second wind and went on to find an old penny, I thoroughly enjoyed my day, the best find I thought was by the chairman Paul, he found a charming silver brooch with the name "Bessie" on it. It made me think of what Bessie would have been like and how she would have treasured her brooch, I wish I could have found it.

Sorry for scoffing at your interest in metal detecting. I thought you would be digging up old coke cans but it seems its a lot more fruitful than that!
You never know, you may also find the man of your dreams. Keep it up!
